A BOY aged 15 has tragically died in a road crash involving a scrambler.

Marcus Forsythe was taken to hospital following the two-vehicle crash outside Ballymoney, Co Antrim, on Saturday but lost his fight for life.

Local UUP councillor Darryl Wilson said the news of the child’s death was “absolutely devastating”.

Marcus is understood to have been on the scrambler with a friend who was taken to hospital for injuries not thought to be life-threatening.

The occupants of the car received treatment at the scene for shock after the crash, which happened on the Taughey Road shortly before 5pm.

An Air Ambulance attended the scene but was not deployed to take any of the casualties to hospital. Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward. The crash was the second to occur in the area on Saturday. That morning, an ambulance attended a serious two-vehicle crash on the nearby Frosses Road.

A man was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital where he is said to be stable, and a woman was treated for minor injuries at the Causeway Hospital.

Meanwhile, Cllr Wilson said the news about Marcus was a “deeply sad day for our town and the entire borough”.

He added: “It is beyond devastating for his family and school friends – for such a young man to have lost his life.

“My thoughts and condolences go out to them. Seacon is a very small village of only 30 or 40 houses, and this will have a massive impact.”

Cllr Wilson said Marcus, who attended Ballymoney High School, was “well-known and liked” in the local community. He added: “Saturday was an awful day on the roads with two serious road traffic collisions either side of Ballymoney.”

Grieving friends also posted heartfelt tributes online to the teenager. One wrote: “RIP Marcus Forsythe you will be missed, you were a good friend.”

Another said: “RIP Marcus Forsythe, took way too soon”. One friend said: “Honestly so sad to hear, rest easy Marcus Forsythe.”

Floral tributes were also placed at the crash scene yesterday. One read: “Gone but not forgotten. Sadly missed.”

The PSNI said in a statement: “Police can confirm a teenager has died following a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the Taughey Road in Ballymoney on Saturday.

“The young male who died has been named as Marcus Forsythe, aged 15.”

Inspector Mick Wood added: “The collision between a scrambler and a car occurred at approximately 4.48pm. A second passenger on the scrambler was treated at hospital for injuries not thought to be life threatening at this time.

“The occupants of the car were treated at the scene for shock.

“We are appealing for anyone who was on the Taughey Road at around the time of the collision to contact police in Coleraine.”
