Dr Foster hubby fears for safety as fans confuse nasty role with real life
DOCTOR Foster bad guy Bertie Carvel has revealed he feels “at risk” after becoming the most despised man on television. Bertie, 40, who plays scheming, cheating Simon Foster, fears the public may confuse his on-screen persona with real life. He said: “I’m aware that there are people on the internet saying how much they hate Simon Foster. “With the millions who watch it, there are likely to be one or two who can’t distinguish between me and the character.
“So I suppose that puts me at risk. And at the level of the really famous actors – which I’m not – you might be sensible to think about your security.
“But I’m not paid enough to live in a gated community with private security, and I wouldn’t want to live like that. You have to just hope that most people enjoy the fictional reality of Simon without thinking he’s real.”
The writer of the hit show – which stars ex-corrie actress Suranne Jones, 39, in the title role as Simon’s dumped ex Gemma – has hinted that the current series could have such a shock ending that a third series may not be possible. The BBC1 drama continues tonight and ends next week following weeks of growing tension.
Mike Bartlett told Radio Times magazine: “Depending on what happens at the end of series two, a third might not be possible.
“That’s all I can say really.”
He added: “I get upset when people describe Gemma as mad. I don’t think she is, she’s just very angry.
“If it was a man behaving like that, you say he was fighting back.”
