I’M STAYING

Republic of Ireland v Moldova Group D, tonight, 7.45pm

MARTIN O’NEILL and Roy Keane have yet to discuss pay after agreeing new contracts in principle.

The FAI announced last night that O’neill (left) will be staying on for the Euro 2020 campaign, having widely hinted at it himself earlier in the day.

There has been no confirmation as yet of Keane’s extension but Mirror Sport has learned that he accepted

O’neill’s invitation to continue for two more years.

O’neill was on €1million a year and Keane about €300,000 before they signed new deals on the eve of Euro 2016, when it was believed they got pay rises.

But while O’neill met FAI chief John Delaney for talks in recent days, financial packages were not discussed – and still haven’t been.

O’neill spoke yesterday of the ‘exciting times’ ahead in trying to qualify Ireland for this World Cup and then Euro 2020 where Dublin will

host four matches.

“I spoke to John very recently and he said on behalf of the board he would like to extend my contract for another couple of years,” said O’neill last night.

“With the Euros coming up I’ve agreed to do so.

I’m delighted as I’ve enjoyed it immensely. International football was something I didn’t know whether you’d get used to or not but qualification for the Euros made it all worthwhile.

“We’re still in this (World Cup) competition and we’ve some younger players coming through who will take over from older players who retire, so it’s exciting times.” Quizzed on Keane (above), O’neill said:

“He’s been excellent for me. He’s a big figure not just for Irish football but world football. All of those things he continues to bring and I couldn’t ask any more of him.”
