SUGAR RUSH
Fell’s in-form ace looks a sweet bet
I’M sweet on BURNT SUGAR in the Challenge Cup (3.35) at Ascot today.
The Roger Fell-trained five-yearold has struck form with a vengeance in the past two months, following second placings at Thirsk and Glorious Goodwood with a victory at Leopardstown on Irish Champions weekend.
Sent off at 7-1 for a big-money handicap over seven furlongs, Declan Mcdonogh’s mount pounced late and stretched away to beat Silverkode by two lengths.
The handicapper has reacted with a rise of 8lb but Burnt Sugar – again partnered by Mcdonogh – has been rated higher in the past and comes here at the very top of his game.
William Buick is taken to make his return from a serious back injury – he suffered a fractured vertebra in a fall at Arlington in August – a winning BLUE POINT one by driving home in the Group 3 John Guest Bengough Stakes (3.00).
Godolphin’s son of Shamardal was unable to operate on heavy ground when fourth to the same owner’s Harry Angel in Haydock’s Sprint Cup four weeks ago.
But he’s a decent tool on better terrain, as evidenced by his defeat of Harry Angel in the Pavilion Stakes over course and distance in May, and his third to Caravaggio in the Commonwealth Cup – also over six furlongs at Ascot – at the royal meeting in June.
He drew a blank at Chantilly over Arc weekend, but Andre Fabre should at least take the Cumberland Lodge Stakes (2.25) back to France, courtesy of the class-dropping WALDGEIST.
John Gosden’s fate at Europe’s premier Flat fixture was considerably happier and the Clarehaven trainer’s WAADY is the one to beat in the opening Listed Hope And Homes For Children Rous Stakes (1.50).
Richard Fahey enters eight runners in Redcar’s Listed totepool Two-year-old Trophy (3.20), with DARKANNA very much the pick
of the octet.
Newmarket’s British EBF Breeders’ Fillies Series Sprint Handicap (2.05) looks a real brain-teaser, but EARTHA KITT will be more at home over the six-furlong distance after failing to get home over seven in Listed grade at Newbury last time
