Royal Mail strike ban bid
Sir Alex’s Mandela plan
SIR Alex Ferguson has launched a fundraising bid to build a statue of Nelson Mandela in Glasgow.
It was the first city in the world to award the anti-apartheid hero the Freedom of the City, in 1981 – when he was still a political prisoner on Robben Island.
Ex-manchester United boss Sir Alex is patron of the Nelson Mandela Scottish Memorial Foundation, calling for donations.
He met the late South African leader three times and said: “It was 20 minutes, but for me it lasted a lifetime. It was fantastic.”
On why he is backing the bid, he said yesterday: “I think Glaswegians understand what struggle is. I am proud to play my part.”
How I went from cancer patient to cancer carer
ROYAL Mail workers’ union chief Dave Ward rallied members as lawyers yesterday tried to stop their strike over pensions and jobs.
Communication Workers Union members are set to walk out from October 19 after voting massively in favour of industrial action.
Royal Mail says it is applying for a High Court injunction to prevent the action after the union refused to call off the strike yesterday.
Mr Ward said: “Instead of playing court room politics they should be listening to the overwhelming ballot result.
“We call on the public and businesses across the country to back their postal workers in a watershed dispute”.
