Almost half of us are in the red, owing an average £4,374, new research from the Money Advice Service reveals.

One in five say they feel like they are drowning in debt and money worries, and it is affecting their mental health.

Trouble sleeping is the norm for those struggling, but the debt nightmare remains in waking hours as people spend an hour a day agonising over their financial problems.

John Penberthy-smith, customer director at the Money Advice Service, said: “Debt can cause real damage to relationsh­ips and family, and put the roof over your head at risk.”

The Money Advice Service says no money problems are unsolvable, but get help quickly. As soon as you realise you’re struggling, seek free, independen­t advice.
