102 YEARS AGO (1915)

Brit nurse Edith Cavell was executed by a German firing squad after being found guilty of treason. She had helped some 200 Allied soldiers to escape.

30 YEARS AGO (1987)

A week-long search for the Loch Ness monster was called off after it failed to find anything of interest.

Operation Deepscan, a sonar exploratio­n of the loch, used £1million worth of equipment to try to track down the elusive creature.
