RORY Mcilroy donated almost £1million to non-profit organisations through his charitable foundation last year, it has been revealed.

His foundations dispensed a total of £1.14million to good causes in the UK and Ireland during 2016.

The money was raised through donations and fundraising activities, £863,190 of which was given to the Foundation directly by the Co Down golf ace.

This included the prize money he collected for winning the Irish Open at the K Club in Co Kildare, as well as cash raised through a number of fundraising initiatives during the same week, including An Evening With Rory Mcilroy and Sir Alex Ferguson.

The proceeds of his victory were split between three children’s charities – Barretstown, the Jack and Jill Foundation, and Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice – each of which received a total of £283,000 towards specific projects.

Other causes that benefitted from monies dispensed by the Rory Foundation last year included Cancer Fund for Children, Mencap Northern Ireland, which supports people with learning disabilities and Sport Changes Life, which encourages sporting excellence among young people.

The trustees’ report said: “Helping kids live better lives is at the core of every project we work with and every programme of change we are part of. “Our goal is to release funds that seek to advance opportunity and lasting change for children who are suffering from ill health or who are unfairly disadvantaged or vulnerable.”

The Rory Mcilroy Foundation Ltd is a subsidiary of its US equivalent, The Rory Mcilroy Foundation, Inc.

The UK company employed one person last year, a chief executive officer, whose salary of £73,000 was part-financed by the Us-based charity.
