- BY DARREN FULLERTON BY CHRIS BEECH

CARRICK Rangers shocked Glentoran at The Oval last night to book their place in the last eight of the Betmclean League

Cup.

Mark Edgar was the man to do the damage with his 66th-minute free kick arrowing in to the top corner.

Chances had been few and far between before that with only Steven Gordon troubling the visitors but his shot was saved by Harry Doherty.

Holders Ballymena United had no such trouble as they saw off Championship strugglers Portadown 2-0 at The Showgrounds.

But the hosts, who struck the woodwork twice in the opening period, had to wait until the second half before moving ahead with Kyle Owens nodding home an Andrew Burns cross in the 62nd minute.

The job was completed six minutes from time when Kevin Braniff’s long-range shot wrong-footed keeper Chris Mcgaughey.

United boss David

Jeffrey said: “We knew Portadown would make it tough for us and that’s how it turned out.”

The final tie saw Dungannon Swifts progress at the expense of fellow Premiership side Warrenpoint Town.

The all-important goal arrived on 80 minutes when Paul Mcelroy netted from close in.

will face Dundee United in the quarter-finals of the Irn-bru Challenge Cup.

Stephen Baxter’s side were paired with Linfield’s conquerors when the draw was made yesterday.

The Crues must travel to Tannadice for the last eight clash with the tie being held on the weekend of November 11/12.
