WHY GENDER IS CRITICAL

In response to proposals to make the gender question voluntary in the next census – so as not to offend transgender people (Mirror, Oct 9) – surely the purpose of a census is to have an accurate understanding of the population?

Knowing the ratio of men to women, as well as gay and transgender, let alone those married and living together, can also determine estimates of population growth. To opt out of giving your gender would seriously jeopardise future planning and budgeting.

As long as enough options are covered, even an ‘other’ for the few who want it, then enough information will be provided.
