£170m round pound piggy banks alert
MORE than 170 million round pounds are stashed in kids’ piggy banks just three days before they go out of use, a survey shows.
They are among 500 million of the old coins still in circulation.
A third of parents admitted that either they or their children did not know they could not be used after Sunday.
And 6% even said they had no plans to spend or exchange their remaining round pounds.
In March the new hardto-forge 12-sided £1 coin featuring a hologram was introduced.
Around 45 million old pounds, 3% of those in use, are believed counterfeit.
Tesco, Iceland and Poundland have said they will accept old coins beyond the cut-off date.
