ON THIS DAY 33 YEARS AGO (1984)
We showed the devastation caused by the IRA bomb at the Tory conference in Brighton. Five people died and 34 were injured in the blast which tore through the Grand Hotel, where members of the Thatcher Government were staying.
74 YEARS AGO (1943)
Italy declared war on former ally Germany, despite the Nazis setting up a puppet state in the north under deposed Mussolini. However, many Italians gave invaluable support to the Allies.
41 YEARS AGO (1976)
A Boeing 707 cargo plane crashed in the Bolivian city of Santa Cruz, killing 91 people. Among the dead were many young footballers who had been playing at a ground near the airport.
