Penguin chick ‘catastrophe’
ONLY two penguin chicks have survived a “catastrophic” breeding season for a colony of 18,000 pairs in Antarctica, experts say.
Rod Downie, of conservation group WWF, said: “This devastating event contrasts with the Disney image of penguins. It’s more like ‘Tarantino does Happy Feet’, with [starved] dead penguin chicks strewn across a beach.”
Campaigners want controls on krill fisheries so that the Adelie penguins in East Antarctica do not have to compete for food.
