SKREAM FOR SOME DUBSTEP

-

If Friday the 13th is unlucky, then how come so many good things happen on that curious combination of day and date. Ultimate’s first-born, a man child no less, arrived on a Friday 13th as did his little friend exactly six months later. Neither had cloven hooves or horns apparent – though they have their moments.

Anyway, today being Friday the 13th again, all it takes is a cursory glance at the gig guide to realise we live in blessed times. Tonight, for example, we have tonnes of great music on our doorstep – not least the formidable Skream who takes his Open To Close tour to Belfast’s Limelight. The concept is of a stripped back club night in which the music does all the hard work – forsaking the bombast and glitter of a stunning light show and amped up production.

The Essex man, who was at the forefront of the dubstep movement explained: “It’s a conscious effort to resurrect the ‘back-tobasics’ element of club culture to the forefront again, forsaking elaborate, extravagant production for the eyes-down, music-focused selection of a pure clubbing experience.

“Last year’s Open To Close tour was definitely my highlight of last year. Actually, one of the highlights of my career. Every show sold out and honestly some of the best shows I’ve ever played. I’ve been super excited to announce that we’re doing it again. There’s so much music I buy as a listener that I play on the OTC tour that I just can’t play during summer festival sets that are 90-120 minutes long, so I am literally collecting music all year round to play on the tour. I can’t wait to kick the tour off, and I’m particularly excited to be taking it to Belfast and Derry.”

Skream plays The Limelight, Belfast, tonight and Sugar, Derry, tomorrow.

What’s even better is that we’ve got tickets to give away for his Belfast show – absolutely free.
