First unveiled at the E3 games conference in 2014, shooter-platformer Cuphead attracted attention for its bold, surreal Max Fleischer cartoon-like style. It’s finally arrived on Xbox One and Windows, and the wait has definitely been worth it.

Consisting mostly of boss fights, Cuphead’s stages are short but, make no mistake, this is a tough game offering a fair but fierce level of challenge.

Each boss is unique, requiring you to master different tactics. There’s no on-screen health bar to clog up the visuals. Instead, when you die a progress meter pops up to give you a rough idea of how close you were to victory. The graphics are a treat, with eye-popping visuals that are practically indiscernible from the animations that inspired them.

This is an addictive adventure that compels you to keep coming back for more.
