Shed a kilo... and live eight weeks longer
OBESE people risk cutting their life by eight weeks for every extra kilogram they carry, research suggests.
Smoking can mean you die seven years earlier, says the study by University of Edinburgh scientists.
They analysed genetic information from 600,000 people in Europe Australia and North America, alongside records of their parents’ lifespan.
Dr Peter Joshi, of the city’s Usher Institute, said: “We found losing 1kg of weight will increase your lifespan by two months.”
The data also suggests that someone who gives up smoking can eventually expect to live as long as a non-smoker.
A good education and being open to new experiences also helps you live longer, said the study. A TEENAGER’S walk home turned into an hour of terror as she was sexually assaulted three times by different men.
The horrific attacks were caught on CCTV and now shocked police are looking for up to five suspects.
Det Insp Suzanne Jordan, from the Met’s child abuse and sexual offences command, said: “This is a horrific multiple sexual assault on a young female who was simply making her way home after a night out.
“We believe two of the three were very serious sexual assaults and we are determined to catch the persons responsible for these hideous crimes.”
It is thought the 17-year-old became separated from friends after visiting a club in Tower Hamlets, East London.
Parts of the incidents were picked up on CCTV, with the girl first filmed being carried by a suspect in dark clothing on Cambridge Heath Road, shortly before midnight on Friday September 29. They are seen appearing to go into a doorway.
Shortly after midnight, she is seen on CCTV, stumbling down Mint Street, being followed by a second suspect – a bearded male – on a racing bicycle.
Officers said the man trailed her as she headed towards Bethnal Green Overground station. When another camera picks her up, the man has approached her and they have reached Corfield Street. Some time later, the man is filmed walking off.
The girl emerges shortly afterwards with her clothing dishevelled.
At around 12.45am police believe there was a third attack, possibly involving two or three men.
Eventually, the teenager collapsed and was spotted by a passer- by who called 999. DI Jordan said: “We would like to thank the members of the public who intervened and possibly prevented her ordeal from continuing even further.”
Police are appealing for witnesses and are also doing tests to find out if the victim was drugged.
