WE’LL PICK A WAY OUT OF DANGER

Keeper Jordan says Toffees are too good for relegation

JORDAN PICKFORD claims Everton are too good to go down.

Pickford has been the one bright spot in a miserable season for a team who but for their keeper would be in even more trouble than they are.

With Ronald Koeman sacked and David Unsworth losing all three of his matches as caretaker boss, a club that spent £150million in the summer are in danger of the drop.

Yet ahead of Watford’s visit tomorrow, Pickford, relegated last term with Sunderland, argued: “We’re not a club that’s going to be in the bottom three for long. It’s just that the luck hasn’t come our way yet.

“It’s a total different scenario for myself from last season. I think one win will get us to 13th or something in the league.

“That one win can become back-toback wins. That’s where the confidence grows and it starts Sunday.”

Everton’s gutless collapse in their 3-0 Europa League defeat in Lyon does not bode well for the clash with the Hornets, a game which could see the big-spending Blues go bottom with almost a third of the campaign gone.

Pickford has stood between them and humiliation at times, but believes in the quality of his team-mates, and is adamant it is just bad fortune and a lack of goals that has got them into a mess that can be turned around.

Dominic Calvert-lewin has tried to fill the gap left by striker Romelu Lukaku’s departure.

“It’s been hard for Dom up top this season and the luck hasn’t been there for him,” said Pickford, 23.

“He’s worked his socks off game in, game out. He’s scored a fair few goals but I think it’s been hard to replace Lukaku. I think Dom has been brilliant for us.”

Asked if there is panic in the dressing room he replied: “No, it’s too early, really. We’ve had a bad lot of games at the start. I love playing games week in, week out but it has been a change with the Europa League and the season starting early.

“That may have affected us but we can’t make excuses as a group. We have to just move forward, dig in, grit our teeth and get the win.”

Everton will try to regroup after a European campaign that proved an embarrassment for a club with genuine hopes of winning the competition.

And £30m summer signing Pickford is sure there is enough backbone in the team to get out of trouble. He said: “Definitely. You have Rooney, you have people who have won medals like the senior players and that’s where they help us.

“That is when the young lads now become big characters.”
