End of the road?

FIVE million of us will be bereft by 10pm when this series comes to an end. Lap up the Cornish vistas and curmudgeonly banter while you can – the next season will be the last one ever.
This all makes us wonder whether Dr Martin Ellingham (Martin Clunes) is about to be struck off.
In this tense finale, he is awaiting his disciplinary hearing after a disgruntled patient filed a complaint about him. It’s a wonder this hasn’t happened before to be honest but, nonetheless, his future hangs in the balance.
But the plot is not the most important thing in this drama where the characters are the stars.
Watch out for a cameo tonight from Hollywood actress Sigourney Weaver, a massive fan of the show, who is returning as American tourist Beth Traywick.
She is back in Portwenn to do some research into her family tree and manages to flatter Mrs Tishell (Sigourney’s real-life best friend Selina Cadell) into sharing her local knowledge.
Mrs Tishell’s opinion of Beth quickly changes though when she finds out Beth has a medical issue she wants to see Martin about, which could jeopardise his position with regards to the hearing.
And in a “that escalated quickly” moment, Martin is forced to take a detour en route to the hearing when a medical emergency intervenes.
