£1,160 going up in smoke

A SMOKER fined for dropping a cigarette is having to cough up £1,160 after losing a legal battle.

Dr James Carey, 63, was fined £80 with £930 costs and a £30 victim surcharge for dropping a cigarette in Crewe town centre.

Carey’s appeal against his conviction for littering has been thrown out and he must pay Cheshire East Council £120 court costs.

Cllr Janet Clowe said: “The council takes a zero tolerance approach against environmental crimes.”
