‘Britain can still call halt over Brexit’

- BY MIKEY SMITH in Brussels

BRITAIN can still cancel Brexit, the peer who wrote Article 50 will say today.

Lord Kerr, central to the drafting of the clause used to trigger Brexit, says the letter Theresa May sent in March can be withdrawn.

He will insist: “As new facts emerge, people are entitled to take a different view. And there’s nothing in Article 50 to stop them. The British people have the right to know this – they should not be misled.”

His intervention comes as Brexit Secretary David Davis heads to Brussels in a bid to end the deadlock.

EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier yesterday suggested the “direction” of trade talks would be led by Britain’s response to a US call for the UK to get rid of “hindrances” imposed by the EU such as food laws.
