Some big names hon­our Sir El­ton John on ITV’S trib­ute salut­ing his 50 years in showbiz and the year of his 70th birth­day.

Rag‘n’bone Man says he nearly didn’t an­swer when El­ton first rang him. “I got a call, it came up as a ‘no caller ID’ and I was like, ‘Oh, it’s go­ing to be like a PPI claim’. And he ba­si­cally just called me to say how much he liked my mu­sic. I don’t know if he re­alises what that means to some­one like me.”

Ed Sheeran re­veals his first kiss was to I Guess That’s Why They Call it the Blues, while Chris Martin says he ad­mired El­ton from seven, when he saw the star with a “hot girl­friend” in the Nikita video, laugh­ing: “As time went on I learned more about him and re­alised some of that was fic­tional.”

And El­ton’s old pal Sir Rod Ste­wart quips: “He’s not quite as good as me, ob­vi­ously, but, erm, he en­joys it.”

Sting, Annie Len­nox and Lionel Richie also fea­ture in El­ton John: The Na­tion’s Favourite Song, on Sun­day at 9pm.
