Bogus worker steals from home

- BY SHAUNA CORR

A BOGUS electricity worker is reported to have stolen a quantity of cash in a distraction burglary.

Police said a man gained entry to the home in East Belfast after telling the resident he was there to check the meter for NIE.

It was then that another man – claiming to be from a company called Sovereign – called at the Inverwood house to talk to about switching electricity supplier.

Constable Allen from the PSNI’S Strandtown station said: “It appears that while this male was at the door, the ‘NIE’ male took a quantity of money from the house.”

Police are urging people to check the ID of anyone who knocks at the door, but they have also said residents should be aware that Sovereign does not supply electricity in Northern Ireland.

Constable Allen added: “If someone calls at your door and you are not sure who they are, do not let them in. Check ID if they have it. If they are let in, under no circumstances leave them alone. That is what they want.”

The PSNI is appealing for anyone who saw anything suspicious in the area at around 10am on Wednesday to contact them.

If you have a cold caller you can verify who they are with a free call to Ring Quick Check on 0800 013 22 90 . A trained operator will check with the company the person at the door is genuine and contact police if necessary.
