Uber’s ‘gig economy’ drivers hail win that makes them employees

- BY MARK ELLIS Industrial Correspondent

TAXI giant Uber yesterday lost its appeal against a ruling giving drivers workers’ rights.

It means the app-based service’s 50,000 UK drivers are no longer self-employed and must get the minimum wage and holiday pay. But the £50billion firm will appeal again, possibly going to the Supreme Court.

The GMB union hailed the “landmark ruling” at the Employment Appeal Tribunal in London.

And TUC leader Frances O’grady said: “It should put gig economy employers on notice.

“Unions will expose nasty schemes that try to cheat workers out of the minimum wage and holiday pay.”

The legal battle was launched last year by Uber drivers James Farrar and Yaseen Aslam, backed by the GMB. They won but Uber appealed, saying the ruling could deprive drivers of “personal flexibility”. Yaseen, 49, said he was “really disappointed” to hear Uber planned to keep fighting. the annual economic meeting. The Russian president high-fived one leader as they assembled for photos but opted for a hand shake with his US counterpart. Trump, on the fourth leg of a 12-day tour of Asia, had earlier battled with a gale in Beijing.
