Prince Philip’s private dinner with best pals

-

be married on 20th November 1947”. It shows the 25 men present dined on foie gras, turtle soup, mixed grill and crepes suzette.

Guests included society snapper Baron Nahum, the Marquess of Milford Haven – best man at the wedding – journalist Philip Youngman Carter, who became editor of Tatler and painter Vasco Lazzolo.

Many of the guests at Westminster’s Belfry – which now houses chef Anton Mosimann’s private dining club – were members of the Thursday Club that Philip belonged to, which met for lunch at Wheeler’s fish restaurant, in Soho, each week. The Belfry menu also features a verse by Dr Samuel Johnson about marriage: “Marriage is the best state for a man in general; and every man is a worse man in proportion as he is unfit for the married state...” Royal memorabilia dealer Ian Shapiro, said: “They are remarkable items. The humour and sense of fun is clearly evident among Prince Philip’s circle, from the menu art by the renowned Feliks Topolski to the selection of each course.”

It is thought the items would be worth £1,000 if put up for auction.
