AK-47 rifle is handed in to gun amnesty
AN AK-47 assault rifle was handed in to shocked police officers running a gun amnesty.
The firearm, also known as the Kalashnikov, was the first to be surrendered.
It had been deactivated, but Sgt Gill Hughes, at Trowbridge police station, Wilts, said it still needed to be handled with care.
The amnesty comes after gun laws are toughened recently, with life sentences as a deterrent.
Chief Insp John Holt, of Avon and Somerset Police, said: “The fight against gun crime is stronger than ever.
“If you know where a weapon is being kept illegally, now is your chance to give up the gun, or tell us anonymously. You will not be prosecuted and you could save a life.”
