Bad eyesight drivers stay behind wheel
DRIVERS should have compulsory eye tests every 10 years, experts say.
They believe there are too many with dodgy vision on Britain’s roads.
More than a third of optometrists have seen people in the past month who carry on driving despite their vision being below the legal standard.
Dr Julie Anne-little, of the Association of Optometrists, said: “People won’t realise that their vision has deteriorated over time.”
Seven people were killed in crashes last year when “uncorrected, defective eyesight” was a contributory factor, said the Department for Transport.
Bride-to-be Natalie Wade, 28, was killed by a partially sighted driver in Rochford, Essex in 2006.
