SUZUKI STALWART BETTER THAN EVER

- BY FRASER ADDECOTT

SUZUKI’S V-strom has amassed impressive sales and a committed following ever since its launch in 2002, first as a 1000cc and later as a 650.

The bike has a reputation for being practical, accessible and good value for money, regarded as a road bike with adventurous looks rather that an out-and-out off-roader. This latest version of the smaller bike comes in two guises – the standard 650, which I am testing here, and the 650XT, which has spoked wheels, hand guards and a belly pan.

Extensively updated for 2017, the bike now looks more like it’s bigger sibling the 1000. There are new vertically positioned headlights, new LED taillights and a slimmer tank. On board, the rider position is relaxed and comfortable, the seat wide and flat at the rear and slimmer at the front.

The screen is 9mm higher than on the previous model and is adjustable to three settings.

The cockpit features a round analogue rev counter and a digital speedo, plus all the usual information, including gear selection, fuel range and traction control setting. The latter has two modes or can be switched off altogether.

The 645cc liquid-cooled V-twin is now Euro4 compliant and, despite the more restrictive exhaust, has a little more power and torque.

The Strom also now features an Easy Start system, which means you just press and release the start button. It also gets Low RPM Assist, which increases the revs slightly as the clutch is released, so it is less likely to stall.

Set off and the bike immediately feels nimble, responsive and easily manageable. The clutch is pleasingly light and gear changes entirely hassle-free.

Mid-range power from the V-twin is a delight and when you push on, it responds eagerly, but smoothly.

Handling through the bends is smooth, stable and comfortingly predictable, due primarily to a suspension system which belies the price.

The rear set-up has rebound adjustment and remote preload adjuster, which can be operated by hand.

Braking, with twin 310mm discs up front and a 260mm rear won’t set the world alight, but is completely dependable.

So, what’s the verdict? Always a good bike, the V-strom is now better than ever, with the updates bringing it bang up to date in looks, performance and technology. It’s easy and fun to ride, plus it’s economical and great value for money.
