NUNO’S MEN FIT FOR PREM

Wanderers four points clear at top after Vieira sees red

- Wolves Leeds Utd BY JAMES NURSEY

WOLVES showed they really mean business this year after swatting aside 10-man Leeds.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s men already look worthy of a Premier League place as they cemented top spot in the Championship.

Barry Douglas, Ivan Cavaleiro and Diogo Jota all scored superb individual goals, before Helder Costa’s penalty.

They blew away Leeds with some brilliant attacking, passing football at pace.

Cavaleiro won a free-kick which Douglas converted in style in the 15th minute from 25 yards.

Then Cavaleiro, signed in 2016 from Monaco for £7million, got on the scoresheet.

It ensured Wolves led 2-0 at the break and put them on course for a fourth successive league win.

Ezgjan Alioski pulled a goal back moments after the restart in a brief flicker of hope for Leeds.

But the visitors’ hopes were dashed by the 60th-minute dismissal of Ronaldo Vieira for a second booking.

Jota, and then Costa, put the seal on an emphatic home win.

Wolves are now four points clear and few teams will have a prayer of catching them on this evidence.

They took the lead with a moment of pure quality. Rampaging Cavaleiro was brought down outside the box by Liam Cooper. Wing-back Douglas, back from suspension, stepped up to curl in his second of the season with his deadly left-foot.

Moments later Leo Bonatini might have doubled their lead but headed wide from Cavaleiro’s cross. They made it 2-0 in the 26th minute, after Jota used silky skills to skip free.

Matt Doherty then found Cavaleiro. who produced a brilliant turn on the edge of the box, before shooting in.

It was Cavaleiro’s fourth of the season and he might have had another, but poked a right-foot effort wide after some good work by Jota.

Jota netted himself in the 72nd minute, after a surging run into the area, before a clever left-foot lofted finish. Then Costa, last season’s player of the year, scored his first this term as he finds his form again after serious injury.

Leeds’ promotion ambitions took another dent after a fifth loss in six games.
