Derek: We need Walt & Souness
DEREK FERGUSON insists Rangers must send an SOS to Graeme Souness and Walter Smith if they are to halt Celtic’s 10-in-a-row bid.
The former Ibrox midfielder admits his suggestion will be met with derision from almost everybody involved in the game.
But he believes the Ibrox board have to offer the fans some hope moving forward.
And Ferguson claims that would come in the shape of the duo who masterminded Rangers’ romp to nine successive titles from 1989 to 1997.
He said: “People will question what I’m about to say here and ask if I’m on drugs or something.
“However, my preference for the next Rangers boss would be to reunite Graeme and Walter and bring them back to Ibrox.
“I know it is unlikely to happen but I would love to see Souey and Smith return for one last hurrah.
“Celtic clinching 10 in a row is a real prospect and Rangers need to think outside the box.
“The club have done all their thinking so far inside the box and produced nothing.
“Souness has said he would never go back but if he is such a Rangers man as he purports to be, would that challenge not entice you? That would get the juices flowing surely.
“Stopping Celtic from making it 10 is the biggest challenge Rangers have faced in their history.
“That’s why it is going to take something revolutionary or dramatic like appointing Souness and Smith because if they don’t then there is only going to be one outcome and that is Celtic winning 10.”
