Pell’s not scared of sack at Saints

- BY DANIEL SHELDON

SOUTHAMPTON manager Mauricio Pellegrino insists he does not fear the sack despite Saints fans calling for his head.

He faces coming under real pressure if his side fail to beat crisis club Everton at St Mary’s tomorrow.

But the defiant Argentine, who only replaced the axed Claude Puel in June, said: “I’m scared about a lot of things, not about my job.

“The biggest risk is to work in football, because you need results all the time.

“It’s a really nice job with a lot of situations that I know well and I knew in my past as a player and as a manager – and it is part of our situation. Everything can happen or can change in just the one or two games.”

Shot-shy Saints have won only three home matches since April and face a testing set of fixtures, playing both Manchester clubs, Chelsea, Tottenham and Arsenal between now and December 30.

But Pellegrino (left) added: “When we think about the end of the last season, between the clubs eighth and 17th, there were six points. We are talking about 10 teams and six points. We have to fight for every single point.

“We are now five points from eighth position, or three points away from being top of the table at the bottom.

“The best thing you can draw conclusions from in difficult moments is that you will know how the people are in this situation – which people want to help the team and which people will be humble to do their best for the team.”
