Man charged with murder attempt after ‘knife attack’

47yr-old due in court over stabbing

A MAN was last night charged with attempted murder after an alleged knife assault in a house.

Detectives investigat­ing the incident in East Belfast said the 47-year-old is due to appear at Belfast Magistrate­s Court today.

He also faces a charge of possessing of an offensive weapon with intent to commit an indictable offence.

The man was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after the incident yesterday morning.

Police forced their way into a house in the Lendrick Street area after reports of a disturbanc­e around 8.30am.

When they got inside, they discovered a 39-yearold man with cuts to his head and hands.

He is currently being treated in hospital and his condition is not thought to be life-threatenin­g.

Detective Sergeant Mason said: “We would appeal to anyone who was in this part of the Newtownard­s Road between 8am and 8.30am yesterday.

“If you saw any suspicious activity, get in contact with detectives at Musgrave on the non-emergency number 101, quoting reference 446 of 26/11/17.

“Alternativ­ely, call Crimestopp­ers anonymousl­y on 0800 555 111.”

Alliance councillor David Armitage said he was “shocked”, and appealed for informatio­n.

Meanwhile, police investigat­ing the stabbing of three men in North Belfast have arrested, quizzed and released two people on bail.

A third person remained in police custody last night.

A 20-year-old woman was one of the two released pending further inquiries.

The injured men were discovered with knife injuries in Belfast in the early hours of Saturday.

They were found in two locations – one in the York Park area and two on the Shore Road.

One man had stab injuries to his abdomen and another suffered a head injury and stab wounds to his neck.

Each remained in hospital over the weekend and their conditions are described as stable.

Police have appealed for informatio­n.
