Cops are hoping to razor lot as pal’s wife fights cancer

PSNI members in charity effort

- BY JILLY BEATTIE

MEMBERS of the PSNI are preparing to shave their heads – and legs – to help a colleague whose young wife has been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

The officers based in Lurgan, Co Armagh, made a special appeal on their Facebook page in a bid to help one of their own.

More used to seeking help from members of the public in solving crimes, they got special permission from their Chief Superintendent to help raise funds for Cancer Focus.

On Craigavon PSNI’S Facebook page, the officer wrote : “I want to tell you about Dave. He used to be based here in Lurgan in response and on the Neighbourhood team, before transferring elsewhere in the South Area but we stayed in touch playing for the PSNI hockey club. This summer, Dave’s wife had some horrendous news.

“She has been diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer. She will never recover from this.

“We, as an organisation but more personally as the PSNI hockey club, have done what little we can to try and make things easier for Dave.

“However when he told us a couple of weeks ago about a plan he had, a light bulb lit in our collective heads.

“As a way of saying thank you to Cancer Focus, Dave is undertaking Brave The Shave at the start of December. He’ll be losing his fine mop of hair to raise money for the charity and he’ll will not be doing this alone.

“As a hockey club, we want to stand shoulder to shoulder with Dave and Brave The Shave with him.

“During the first weekend of December, we’ll all be getting our heads shaved – for our already follically challenged members – legs.

“This is not just a sign of solidarity with Dave and his family, but to try and do our bit to make a difference to his fundraising efforts for, as I’m sure you’ll agree, an amazing cause.

“With your help, this Christmas, we could make a difference and help Cancer Focus truly take the fight to one of the things that so often rips families apart at this time of year.”
