Funnyman Mcintyre’s Big Show blow for Cowell’s ailing X Factor

- IAN HYLAND

Reading between the lines, I’m guessing Simon Cowell and Michael Mcintyre are not exactly showbiz buddies.

Mcintrye quit Britain’s Got Talent after just one series because he was uncomfortable with too many aspects of the show. Cowell later responded by naming him the second-worst judge in its history. Even if that was just banter Mcintyre is surely having the last laugh – Michael Mcintyre’s Big Show is hammering weekly nails into rival Cowell’s X Factor coffin.

Big Show is easily the best light entertainment format since Saturday Night Takeaway, even though much of it is highly derivative. Noel Edmonds must sit at home every Saturday night shaking his fists at the latest hidden camera stunts. This week’s show even included members of the public slaughtering hit songs at a cheesy karaoke night – a straight rip-off of The X Factor or what? However, to borrow a Cowellism, Mcintyre has really made this show his own. Plus, the best thing about it is the one bit Mcintyre can claim is original. He first tried out the Send To All text message game on the audience members during his 2014 chat show. He has since persuaded celebrities to take part. On Saturday we got to hear what Danny Dyer’s friends thought about him being knighted by the Queen. It was a joke, of course. There’s no way Dyer would get a knighthood. Mind you, if he stays in Eastenders for another year Liz might slip him a bravery award.
