THE PRIVATE LIVES OF THE MONARCHS

YESTERDAY, 9pm Another nosy romp through the life of a notorious monarch – this time the tragic ‘mad’ King George III, as well as his son, the Prince Regent. Father and son absolutely hated each other, and historian Tracy Borman finds out about their fractious relationship, made worse by the King’s madness – a condition that has itself given rise to several theories.

Focusing on the most dramatic characters in British history, this is compelling stuff.

ASHES TO ASHES

DRAMA, 8pm It’s always fun to play “who on earth is that?” when new actors pop up in these dramas. Let me help you out – this time Phil Davis (Whitechapel, Poldark) and Asa Butterfield (The Boy In the Striped Pyjamas) show up as part of a plot about an armed robbery.

The investigations lead to Alex (Keeley Hawes) being tied up and left to die in an industrial freezer. And Gene (Philip Glenister) wonders whether he is past his prime.

MY DAD’S ON DEATH ROW

REALLY, 10pm We have a morbid fascination with death row, and this new one-off true crime story is both gripping and terrifying. Gaining unrestricted access to a Texan prison, it focuses on two horrific murders, including interviews with the killers and their children. One is John Battaglia who shot two of his three daughters. The other is Coy Wesbrook who, at the time of filming, was awaiting execution after killing five people in less than one minute.

THE SECRETS IN MY FAMILY

W, 9pm Shows like this and, of course, its sister Long Lost Family, make you realise just how many families have faced separation and misery.

DNA technology has transformed our ability to track people down – hell, even Alex Jones is getting in on it.

In this episode, Maureen, 72, (above) has waited a long time to find her older sister Beryl, whom she has not seen since she was six. And, as ever, there are more twists in the tale.
