Hfourtoh sparks is a chip off the old Jock

ANOTHER day, another record broken.

Yesterday at Hampden Brendan Rodgers found himself quoted in history alongside Jock Stein (inset) ehen he became the first Celtic manager since the great man himself to scoop up four successive domestic trophies.

On the face of it this less than remarkable 2-0 Betfred Cup Final win over Motherwell will be easily forgotten over time. But what Rodgers is achieving and the legacy of success he is leaving behind is likely to last a lifetime.

First he eclipsed a 100-year record held by Willie Maley. Now he’s matched one of Stein’s. This is quite some collection he’s building.

“I didn’t know that up until yesterday. I think someone mentioned it to me so of course it’s a very special thing to have happen to you, when there have been so many great managers,“Rodgers says later when the back story behind this latest triumph is brought up.

“But I think today is a trophy for everyone at the club. You saw the support today was absolutely amazing, three-quarters of the stadium really helping the team. The backroom staff, with the work that they put in, combined with the players, meant that today was a great reward for the club.

“For me personally of course it gets associated with that but for me my concentration really is about thinking about Wednesday and getting into the next league game.

“It’s a brilliant victory for us today. We had to tick a few character boxes after midweek and yet again the players produced.

“It was always going to be difficult for us with the way Motherwell have started the season and the confidence with which they play.

“We were always going to have to be patient today and wait for our moments. Once we got the first goal, we then settled into a rhythm.

“It’s our fourth trophy in 12 months which is a phenomenal achievement really. Huge credit to the players because of their hunger and desire to keep playing. They have that belief.”
