Belgium coach Roberto Martinez: No secrets.. we all know each other

-

even though they have drawn Belgium – ranked fifth in the world – in their group, they play them last and are supposed to be through by then.

But that is exactly the sort of arrogance Southgate is anxious to guard against – especially after losing to Iceland at Euro 2016 and failing to get out of the group in Brazil in 2014 when Costa Rica finished top. Southgate said: “When we have just come from tournaments where Costa Rica then Iceland knocked us out, it would be folly not to be serious about our mentality, but also not being fearful of what might happen – it’s an important balance to find.

“Belgium will capture everyone’s imagination at home. It’s probably the best team they have ever had. They are a really top team.

“But we also have to handle the expectation of being one of the favourite teams in the group. When you’re involved with England, that’s the mentality you’ve got to have.” PANAMA boss Hernan Dario Gomez reckons England do have a single player who frightens him.

He also took a cheeky dig at the Three Lions, rating them on a par with Wales – with whom Panama drew 1-1 in Cardiff last month.

Panama are 56th in the FIFA rankings and have qualified for the finals for the first time. At France 98, Gomez was boss of Colombia, losing 2-0 to England in the group stage.

A former Colombia international, the 61-year-old (right) said: “For me, the only truly dangerous player in the world is Messi. They all have good players – Belgium, England. We played Wales who are more or less the same style.

“We also played against Iran, who are like Tunisia. We have knowledge of what we’ll come up against.

“We’re very happy with this group because that’s why we’ve come – to play the big teams, the big names, Belgium, England and Tunisia.

“I drew both England and Tunisia in France, so I’m happy.

“I watched England’s last match with Germany, good. Young. A young team, that’s recently been reinvigorated.

“Organised. Practical.”
