Gunners won’t give up on Ozil

- BY JOHN CROSS

ARSENAL are making one last push to keep Mesut Ozil.

Gunners boss Arsene Wenger has not given up on holding onto the 29-year-old and hopes a new round of negotiations could persuade him to stay.

Manchester United and Barcelona are keen on the Germany international, out of contract at the end of the season and able to sign a pre-contract with foreign clubs from January 1.

Arsenal have offered about £275,000-a-week, but Ozil has made it clear it is also about winning trophies and would be able to get an even bigger deal as a free agent.

With Alexis Sanchez almost certain to leave, the Gunners aim to pull out all the stops on Ozil.

Losing their two biggest stars for nothing in one summer would be devastating and, while Sanchez’s form has been unpredictable with his future uncertain, Ozil has been back to his best in recent weeks.

Ozil knows he can become the biggest earner in Arsenal’s history with a mega deal and it is now a case of whether he can be talked into staying rather than join a club with a bigger chance of trophies.

Wenger recently backtracked on suggesting Ozil or Sanchez may be sold next month, insisting the club will not cash in on them.

Paris Saint-germain and Manchester City are eyeing Sanchez. PSG may bid for him in January, which could tempt City – long confident of getting him on a free at the end of the season – into a bidding war.

City offered £60m on deadline day in the previous transfer window, but Arsenal turned it down.
