MACHINES OF WAR
YESTERDAY, 8pm The concluding episode of this cheery documentary series about deadly weapons, but it’s a compelling insight. This one examines 150 years of machine gun evolution. Specially staged live-fire machine gun events explain the key moments in the weapon’s history. From the First World War machine gun that can chop down a tree, to the first gangster hit with a Tommy Gun, to the modern GAU-8 Avenger – one of the deadliest machine guns in the world.
QI
DAVE, 8pm Another Christmas special, and it’s ‘N’ for Noel. There are plenty of festive facts with a Danish slant as Sandi Toksvig schools Josh Widdicombe, Susan Calman, Matt Lucas and Alan Davies on her homeland. They are even wearing some cheery red hats, which look like dunces caps. Expect the usual quizzing, with some carols, games and other seasonal traditions thrown in. And the prize? A rather scary-looking marzipan pig.
TASKMASTER: CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
DAVE, 9pm It’s the final showdown, with more bizarre instructions revealed via letters with red waxy Taskmaster seals. Katherine Ryan, Josh Widdicombe, Noel Fielding, Bob Mortimer and Rob Beckett are fighting for glory. They must figure out what’s in a locked case, make an edible and wearable mask, and create the biggest mess they can – and completely clear it up. It’s a laugh-out-loud episode to top them all.
THE LOCKERBIE BOMBING
REALLY, 10pm
On December 21, 1988 a Pan Am 747 jet exploded over the Scottish town of Lockerbie after a terrorist bomb on board detonated. Eleven residents of the town were killed, as well as 259 people on board the flight. The 270 victims were citizens of 20 different nations. This chilling documentary is the story of the event that remains the deadliest terrorist attack and aviation disaster in Britain, told by those who were there.
