U2 rocker ‘in pain, suffocating and alone’ during terrifying incident 57-year-old music legend said he is ‘the luckiest man on Earth’
U2 star Bono has told how he nearly died in an experience that left him feeling terrified and alone.
The 57-year-old singer said he felt like he was suffocating and was in pain but did not elaborate further on what caused his brush with death.
He told Rolling Stone magazine: “I am the f***ing luckiest man on Earth. I didn’t think I had a fear of a fast exit.
“I am a singer and everything I do comes from air. I felt I was suffocating. That was the most frightening thing. I felt very alone.”

He told Rolling Stone magazine: “I am the f***ing luckiest man on earth. I didn’t think I had a fear of a fast exit. I thought it would be inconvenient ‘cause I have a few albums to make and kids to see grow up. I had a sense of suffocation. I am a singer, and everything I do comes from air. And in this process, I felt I was suffocating. That was the most frightening thing that could happen to me because I am in pain.
“I felt very alone and very frightened. People have these extinction events in their lives. It was physical for me.”
Bono has suffered health issues in the past. He had a cancer scare in 2000, and a bike smash five years later that left him with amnesia.
In 2010 the rocker needed emergency surgery on a herniated lumbar disc.
He added: “I have had a hail of blows over the years.”
