Honest, Guv, I just have to punch the air

- IANHYLAND

With ITV’S daytime monster The Chase going from strength to strength in the ratings, it was only a matter of time before someone realised Bradley Walsh wasn’t the quiz’s only star with primetime potential.

So it was no surprise to see one of the chasers being given the opportunity to be the meat in the Wednesday night Corrie sandwich.

It was even less of a shock to discover Anne “The Governess” Hegerty had got the nod. I’ve always thought she had the wit and charisma to branch out on her own.

The only problem was Britain’s

Brightest Family felt like a lunchtime quiz that had suddenly been promoted but didn’t have time to buy a new outfit. It wasn’t awful by any means. It just looked cheap.

Sending Anne to Piers Morgan’s hairdresser appeared to have been ITV’S only attempt at adding a little showbiz sparkle.

I also felt a twinge of concern when I saw the adult contestants on last night’s opener boasted enough letters after their names to fill a Scrabble board. I was a bit worried this might be a bit too testing for the likes of me.

Luckily, the questions were pretty broad. Which meant I was soon remembering the best thing about watching a quiz show full of brainboxes: Beating one of them to the correct answer.

Sometimes, if it’s an especially precocious teenager, I might give the air an extra punch. Judge me harshly for that if you must. But please, don’t pretend you don’t do exactly the same.
