‘FOOTIE ABUSE’ VICTIM: WE ALL WANTED TO BE A STAR

- BY STEPHEN WHITE

FORMER coach Barry Bennell had a “power hold” over boys who dreamt of being professional footballers, a court heard.

Bennell, 64, is accused of 48 child sex offences against 11 victims between 1979-1990. Yesterday a jury at Liverpool crown court heard how one alleged victim met Bennell when he came to a training session as a scout for Manchester City.

He said: “He would make you feel like you stood out. Every boy just dreamed of being a footballer, so everybody wanted to please him.” Boys would stay at Bennell’s home, above a video shop he owned, where he would play music loudly during the abuse, the court heard.

The pan-pipes tune Cacharpaya “just sends chills down my spine”, said the witness, who added victims kept quiet because, “We HERE’S your chance to attend a starstudded night at this year’s Baftas at the Royal Albert Hall.
