May: Press freedom at risk in Lords
THERESA May blasted the House of Lords for trying to attack press freedom with a vote for a second Leveson-style inquiry.
The Prime Minister said papers should “hold politicians to account” adding: “This vote would undermine high-quality journalism and a free press.”
She vowed to reverse the vote in the Commons.
Culture Secretary Matt Hancock called proposed data protection changes a “hammer blow” to papers.
The Mirror has exposed a series of Lords expenses scandals, including £1.2million claimed by peers who did not take part in debates for a year.
Tory MP Jacob Reesmogg suggested peers “wish to keep their dirty linen in the closet”.
