‘Gunners targets so average’

sign United playmaker Mkhitaryan as they cannot guarantee trophies. The Frenchman, 47, said: “Since he joined United, he has not been involved enough. I’m not sure he has a winning mentality.

“Sometimes he reminds me of Mesut Ozil – you really have to push him to show his character, and put him under pressure to display his best qualities.

“There’s no doubt he has great skill, but I’m not sure he’s the kind of footballer Arsenal need. They should be focusing on other positions.”

And Petit, a ‘Double’ winner with the Gunners in 1998, told Paddy Power News: “I wonder about the quality of players Arsenal have signed. They’re struggling to bring in top-quality players, and to keep the ones they have. It has been like this at the club for a long time.

“They must be more competitive in the market – times have changed since I left. There has been a lot of speculation about the likes of Aubameyang and Malcom coming in – but Arsenal should be aiming higher.”

Mkhitaryan is set to join the Gunners in a player-plus-cash deal for Sanchez, while Borussia Dortmund striker Aubameyang – who has been left out of tonight’s Bundesliga clash with Hertha Berlin – and Bordeaux’s Brazilian forward Malcom top their wish list.

Sanchez trained with the Arsenal youngsters yesterday as his move to United edged closer to being completed.
