It’s the Silence of the shams...

-

If BBC1’S pathology drama Silent Witness was anything like real life I’m not surprised Donald Trump postponed his visit to London.

The first episode of its latest two-parter began with a US embassy staffer being murdered and ended with another diplomat disappearing. Then again, the latter did manage to have textbook generic TV sex with Nikki (Emilia Fox, below) before vanishing.

So if Trump happened to catch the episode in between tweeting and watching Fox News then Theresa May could well be getting a call today. Anyway, back to my point about

Silent Witness being anything like real life. We all know it isn’t. It’s actually becoming more far-fetched.

It’s never a good sign when you find yourself laughing at a serious TV drama or expecting Jack Bauer to come running in at any minute.

This latest story is so desperate to be Spooks I’m surprised they didn’t just rename it Spooky Silence.

Silent Witness’s main problem is it focuses on such a small team. So they must be involved in every part of the story – however ridiculous it looks – or we have padded-out personal stuff.

We had the double whammy last night. It was a pity as the murder was intriguing. The US ambassador’s assistant was killed then seated on a park bench with his arm in his jacket like Lord Nelson taking a breather from feeding the ducks.

It got a bit silly after that. I’m still wondering why the embassy wasn’t placed on lockdown the minute one of its staff was murdered.
