EXTREME HAIR WARS

5STAR, 8pm GRAVITY-DEFYING and downright bizarre, this fantasy hair competition is a strangely compelling parade of daring dos.

In each episode, four teams of hairdressers and make-up artists go head to head, barnet to barnet, to achieve the follically impossible.

And while you’ll partly wonder why you’re watching, you won’t be able to turn over because the creations are simply extraordinary. One hair-do seems to have something resembling Marmite trickling down the middle – and, yes, this seems to be intentional.

Comedian London Hughes hosts, with giants of the hair world Robert Masciave and Martin Holmes as judges.

One of them once made a dress entirely out of hair, so they seem qualified for the job. They observe and ruminate while doing some wise beard-stroking and comb fiddling. Meanwhile, there is trash talk from the four hair stylists. “I know my level,” says Evan. “And you are NEVER my level.” Right, got it.

The first challenge is a braid battle. Laura is doing some kind of scaffolding, Jodie is waiting for the hair to speak to her, and Brandon embarks on his style which fuses avant garde with editorial.

“I call it avantorial,” he says.

Later, the contestants can let their imaginations run wild with an ‘Into The Woods’ theme, with results including LED butterflies and a cloak made from hair.

Viewers, we need to accept the fact that every job in life seems to have potential for a reality show.

Next time, Accountancy Wars, Teacher Factor and Britain’s Got Estate Agents.

But, for now, enjoy this totally hair-raising show.
