PSNI plea for witnesses & dashcams

- BY JILLY BEATTIE

POLICE say they need every witness they can get following a terrifying late-night hijacking.

One woman was dragged from her car and as the thieves sped off they collided with a vehicle driven by a pregnant woman.

The PSNI praised the public who sprang to the assistance of the women in Banbridge, Co Down, on Wednesday night.

A police spokesman said: “Whether it be in person, or your dash cam, we need all the witnesses we can get.

“Two males dragged a woman from a car in Church Square, hijacking the vehicle and driving it up the town.

“They collided with several other cars, including one driven by a pregnant lady, before a final crash at the Newry Road roundabout.”

The officer thanked the public who helped.

He said: “The two suspects tried to flee, however, they were caught and restrained by brave members of the public who held them until we got there.

“Both were arrested for hijacking, aggravated taking and driving away, driving when unfit through drink or drugs, and one later for assault on police and resisting arrest.

“We’re also looking into possible theft of a charity box recovered near The Coach in a bin. If you’re missing a charity box, we have it.”
