Wenger: My £60m Sanchez blunder

- BY JOHN CROSS

ARSENE WENGER has finally admitted he made a £60million mistake by not selling Alexis Sanchez last summer.

Wenger insisted, if he “had his time again”, he would have allowed Sanchez (above) to join Manchester City after they made a mega-bid on deadline day last August.

The Gunners boss also claimed Sanchez has joined Manchester United for a contract worth even MORE than £600,000 a week.

When quizzed about the huge sums reported, Wenger pointed to the

ceiling, as if to signify it was worth even more.

The manager, who made the remarks during a Q&A session for the club’s executive box holders, suggested it was difficult to keep an unhappy player.

He admitted he should have sold Sanchez because his contract was running down, but said he was determined to bring in a replacement and ran out of time to sign Thomas Lemar.

The Chile forward endured an unhappy final four months at the club. Wenger pointed to his drop in goals and assists, compared to the previous season, to explain why the gamble backfired.

The 68-year-old left the room having evaded questions about whether he would remain in charge for the final year of his contract.

He insisted he was focused on reaching the Champions League by finishing in the top four, claiming it would be tough to do so via the Europa

League.
