TAYLOR-MADE SCORER PLEA Gary needs his strikers to start finding the net

-

PORTSTEWART manager Gary Taylor has told his misfiring side to find their scoring boots – and fast.

Another goal-free afternoon on Saturday means the Seahawks have scored just one in their last four in the league.

Johnny Stewart is their top league scorer with four so far – a haul Moyola Park’s Jason Paul managed in one game earlier this season.

That barren spell has gone hand-in-hand with four straight defeats to leave them languishing in the bottom two.

A Newington win at the weekend also opened a small but concerning gap between the Ports and Annagh and the rest of the division.

And Taylor (below) has told his team – the lowest scorers in the league – to step up to the mark and prevent an instant demotion back out of the PIL.

“We’re missing chances which I’m scratching my head to work out how,” he admitted.

“And when you’re missing gilt-edged chances that then puts your defence under more pressure.

“It’s not just one player missing either, it’s everyone.

“And we’re being punished too – so often we’ll miss a hatful of chances and then concede and it costs us.

“It was the same on Saturday when Tiarnan Rafferty sets up the free-kick and you just know where it’s going to end up.

“The thing is Johnny is quite capable of doing it too because we see it in training all the time.

“He’s such a good player so it will come for him, no doubt about it. And Quiggy [Eoghan Quigg] is working hard too.

“We’ve also brought a few new faces in so we’re definitely working on it!

“The numbers are great in training and everyone’s putting it in so we’re trying to make our luck change.”

Saturday’s encounter against Moyola turned out to be a lot tighter than the previous affair on the north coast back in September. In that one the Seahawks were rocked on to their back feet by three goals at the end of the first half and another double in the second period.

At the weekend, however, Portstewart (above) offered considerably more resistance to their promotion-chasing opponents. In fact it took until 10 minutes after the restart for the hosts to break the deadlock and, who else, but Rafferty was the man doing the damage with a wellstruck free-kick. That’s now five league games on the spin that the 25-yearold has found the net for
