ON THIS DAY 37 YEARS AGO (1981)

We told how miners had won a “massive victory” over Margaret Thatcher’s Government. In a U-turn, ministers agreed not to close 23 pits, in the hope of averting strike action. The Government also agreed to pump millions of pounds into the industry.

76 YEARS AGO (1942)

US President Roosevelt authorised the relocation of Japanese Americans to internment camps. An estimated 120,000 people were imprisoned in 10 camps for the duration of the war.

21 YEARS AGO (1997)

China’s leader Deng Xiaoping died aged 92. Succeeding Chairman Mao in 1978, Deng introduced economic reforms but was a hardliner, and responsibl­e for ordering the army to crush the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests by students.
