So you’re feeling ill... but do you really need a doctor?
IT’S all too easy for any of us to dash off to the doctor’s at the first signs or symptoms of illness. But should we? Is it really necessary?
NHS England is attempting to save £190m by no longer routinely prescribing treatment for self-limiting conditions – one of those being the common cold. Which other examples of conditions should people attempt to self-treat rather than going straight to their GP?
AThere are more than 30 selflimiting conditions, which include haemorrhoids, infant colic, diarrhoea and constipation, aches and pains, as well as coughs and colds. They can all be treated with either home remedies or with general lifestyle advice, or products available over the counter.
Depending on the particular symptom, they would be treated accordingly.
It is important to be aware of the symptoms you are experiencing, and then to pop into your local pharmacy where you will be given the appropriate advice about them.
How long should people leave it before they do actually go to see their GP if they have a particular concern?
